Egret regret: Hills photographer captures frog’s final hop at Herdsman Lake

Staff WriterStirling Times

HILLS-based photographer Michael Phillips couldn’t believe his luck on Sunday morning when he was taking some snaps at Herdsman Lake Wildlife Centre.

He had the good fortune to witness an egret having a frog for breakfast, and was able to rattle off some stunning shots.

“The photos were taken on the boardwalk near the Herdsman Lake Wildflife Centre on Sunday morning,” Mr Phillips said.

“I was doing some bird photography and was chatting to a lady by the name of Pam who was the one who spotted the frog in the egret’s mouth – I just had the camera.

“The egret was about four metres away from us and kept dunking the frog into the water and trying to get a better grip on it – at first it had the frog just by the shoulder.

“The frog kept trying to push away with its legs.

“This went on for maybe five minutes before the egret finally had breakfast.

“It was truly an awesome event to watch let alone photograph – maybe a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.”
