The North Beach resident held a birthday party honouring the work done by the Young Women’s Christian Association (YWCA) Encore program, a program his friend Mrs Archer had participated in after undergoing treatment for breast cancer.
Mr Balkau and his wife Wanda said they had seen how the program had improved the life of their friend and wanted to be able to help the program somehow.
‘We wanted to raise money for a charity that helped people with breast cancer and we saw how Encore had helped Sue, so instead of receiving presents for my birthday, we asked that guests donate money to the program,’ he said.
The eight-week program includes gentle floor and hydrotherapy exercises to meet the exercise and support needs of women after the trauma of their treatment in a nurturing and supportive environment.
It is available to women of any age who have had breast cancer surgery at any time in their lives, and helps to reduce the risk of lymphoedema and can assist in the management of lymphoedema, according to program co-ordinator Cathy Stubbs.
The programs are held in various locations around Perth including Riverton, Shenton Park, Success, Kalamunda and Wanneroo, and will start in October.
