FEDERAL Assistant Minister for Cities and Digital Transformation Angus Taylor toured City of Stirling development projects this week after the Mayor and chief executive’s recent Canberra lobbying trip.

Joined by Justice Minister and Stirling MHR Michael Keenan, deputy mayor Keith Sargent and Stirling chief executive Stuart Jardine, the tour included a visit to Scarborough’s redevelopment project site and the future Stirling City Centre site.

The City is seeking Federal Government funding of $64 million to support part of the Stirling City Centre Project by developing Stephenson Avenue through to the Mitchell Freeway.

The development will provide a wider connection to the Osborne Park and Herdsman/Glendalough areas that will support employment growth and residential development.

Mr Keenan said the project provides a great opportunity to strengthen economic growth in the area and he supported the City’s proposal.

“Statistics from the 2016 Census show my electorate of Stirling now contains some of the highest population densities in the state; but we need to make sure that this growth is supported with the appropriate infrastructure and services,” he said.

“This project is a great step forward for the City of Stirling that has the potential to create jobs, ease congestion and pave the way for Stirling’s City Centre to be a competitive, vibrant and attractive retail experience for both local residents and visitors.”

Mr Sargent said the City was thrilled to have both ministers visit after an invitation was extended by the Mayor on a recent trip to Canberra.

“The Stirling City Centre project is our number one priority and a Federal Government contribution of $64 million will unlock significant opportunities, creating over 30,00 jobs, substantial private investment and affordable housing in the first stage alone,” he said.

“The visit will allow both ministers to see firsthand the collaboration between the City and the State Government to transform the Stirling City Centre and Scarborough Beach, demonstrating our vision for the future to unlock billions of dollars’ worth of development for the State’s economy with this essential piece of infrastructure for the region.”
