A DIANELLA school is partnering with Perth Glory to provide a professional pathway for aspiring soccer players.

St. Andrew’s Grammar is the first Perth Glory Academy School, which will identify and help students on the path towards becoming professional soccer players.

Principal Craig Monaghan said it was a “massive coup” for the school.

“We want to be one of the best junior development schools in the country, developing excellent football players while making sure they are achieving academically,” he said.

“It is a real honour for our school to be chosen as the first of its kind in Perth.

“A great deal of work has gone into creating the terms of this partnership, and we are also investing in resurfacing our front oval so that our students can enjoy an excellent pitch all year round.”

The agreement will provide the school with a permanent professional soccer coach who will train students in a specialised class and be trained to identify talented students.

Mr Monaghan said it would eventually become a high performance program requiring trials but initially would be open to students with some interest and skills in soccer who wanted to represent the school.

Perth Glory football director Jacob Burns said the academy aimed to expand opportunities for young WA players.

“We’re extremely excited to be able to offer that through our school program that balances both academic education but also a football curriculum that is elite,” he said.
