A HAMERSLEY community garden has been selected as the best in Perth.

The Perth’s Garden Great competition run by the Yellow Pages, White Pages and Australian City Farms and Community Gardens Network recently crowned Hamersley Habitat Community Garden its winner.

Co-ordinator and Hamersley resident Donelle Wilson features in the garden on the front cover of the two Perth directories and said she was shocked when she found out it had won.

“It was a great honour for our community garden because it’s about showing what the local community can do,” she said.

“I’m very fortunate to have a great team of gardeners.”

The garden has been running for three years in what was previously a vacant dusty area “used for the wrong reasons”.

It relies on volunteers who help maintain the wide range of fruit trees, flowers, vegetables and native plants but Ms Wilson said volunteers did not need to have any gardening experience to contribute.

“For me it’s about being creative,” she said.

“It really has brought this community together.

“Community gardens are a great thing to have.”
