Karrinyup artist gives Homage to the Horse with Outback exhibition

Kate LeaverStirling Times

KARRINYUP artist Roslyn Nolen’s solo exhibition Homage to the Horse explores wild horses she encountered in the Outback.

In preparation for the exhibition, Ms Nolen spent time in outback Northern Territory observing, sketching and taking photo references of wild brumbies.

Horses were a large part of her life growing up on a sheep property in Victoria, where her father was a horse trainer.

“Observing a stallion, so watchful and asserting protective authority over his band of horses is powerful,” she said.

“These brumbies have had little, if any, human contact.”

In the collection of 26 works, Ms Nolen explores the anatomy of the horse using a range of materials: acrylic, ink, biro, graphite and charcoal.

Ms Nolen will host an artist talk at Gallows Gallery on Wednesday, February 1 at 11.30am.
