The Salvation Army spokesman Warren Palmer said increased living costs meant people were going without medication, skipping meals and foregoing adequate winter heating.

“We encourage those who are able to donate to this year’s appeal because no one should have to go it alone,” he said.

“The Salvos can only meet the great need within our community because year after year, Australians come together to stand by those doing it tough.”

Centre marketing manager Jennifer Ralph said they hoped to collect more than 3000 clothing items and $4000 in donations.

Good condition, washed and clean coats, jackets, jumpers, baby and children’s clothing, and new blankets or doonas can be placed in a collection bin in the centre court until July 1.

Volunteers are also needed for two hours to help with collections; call 0428 085 250 or email Brooke.Castelli@aus.salvationarmy.org.
