A MAN has been charged with stealing baby formula.

An off-duty police officer saw the man allegedly leave a supermarket at Karrinyup Shopping Centre on January 30 without paying for a container of baby formula, worth about $20.

The officer tried to stop the man and a scuffle ensued, resulting in the officer injuring his shoulder and the man running away.

Scarborough Police used CCTV footage from the centre to identify the man and charged him on February 12 with stealing and escaping legal custody.

Meanwhile, the owner of an Osborne Park furniture store has tracked down an alleged thief via Gumtree.

Designer cushions worth $16,000 were stolen from the Frobisher Street property in November.

The owner did not report the theft to police but monitored Gumtree, where they spotted the cushions for sale.

Scarborough Police Senior Sergeant Craig Wanstall said the owner arranged to meet the seller, where they confronted them about the alleged theft.

They recovered six cushions and subsequently contacted police.

Snr Sgt Wanstall said if the information was reported to police they could have attended to recover the items and potentially charge the seller, whose location is now unknown.
