Laura PondStirling Times

A MAN has crashed his car during a high-speed police chase through Perth’s northern coastal suburbs.

According to police, the pursuit started after they stopped the man while he was returning to his car at a service station on West Coast Drive in Sorrento on Friday morning at 3.30am.

The man got into the passenger seat of the idling car, telling officers he was waiting for the female driver who was inside the store.

Police entered the store and were told by a staff member that there was no woman and the man was the one who had been driving.

They saw the man drive off so gave chase in their vehicle, following him as he headed north.

The driver is alleged to have reached speeds of 120km/h along Whitfords Avenue in Hillarys and drove on the wrong side of Northshore Drive, where he crashed into a light pole.

Police chased the man, who fled the car on foot, but he managed to escape.

They are trying to find a 23-year-old Exmouth man they believe can help with the investigation.
