Tracy Woodward said she was inspired to create the group, Meals by Mums, after realising her one-off donations of food and drink to homeless people were just a short-term fix.

‘When I used to walk along the street and saw someone that was hungry I’d go grab them fast food and then I thought it wasn’t really nutritious food and it wasn’t a big sort of solution,’ Ms Woodward said.

Ms Woodward said she decided to develop a group cooking out of Our Lady of Good Counsel Primary School in Karrinyup, after getting permission from the school principal.

‘I contacted a few organisations to see if I could perhaps start cooking some lasagnes from home and sending them out there but everyone said no because of occupational health and safety and that’s when I had the idea of going to the school tuck shop,’ she said.

Ms Woodward said although it was ultimately up to State and Federal Governments to improve homelessness in Australia, Meals for Mums were happy to provide whatever help they could.

‘Obviously we’re just putting a band-aid on the problem by what we’re doing, the solution comes from changing infrastructure and getting affordable housing available and it’s really government decisions that are going to affect the rate of homelessness,’ she said.

‘But we thought while there is still this problem, even though we’re not going to be the ones who are going to be able to get the solution, we can help.’

Scarborough MLA Liza Harvey congratulated the mothers on their work.

‘I would like to take this opportunity to thank these incredible women who have been inconspicuously cooking up a storm for the homeless,’ Mrs Harvey said.
