ST Kieran’s Church in Osborne Park has welcomed new priest Father Wilson Donizetti in time for its annual festival of the Lady Maria SS Annunziata.

Taking over from Father Michael Gatt two months ago, Father Donizetti will officiate the mass in English and Italian.

The Brazilian-born priest said he was settling into his new role well and looking forward to celebrating the mass.

“The Festa is one of the main events at the parish, the Italian community love the celebration,” Father Donizetti said.

“It’s a really new thing for me, and I’m looking forward to it.”

St Kieran’s Church has a long history with the local Italian community.

In 1972, a statue of the Lady Maria SS Annunziata was brought from the town of Raccuia in Southern Italy and blessed with a procession of 5000 people.

Father Donizetti said the messages of commitment and faithfulness that Lady Maria represented were still relevant today.

“The main message is to be open to the will of the Lord like the Virgin Mary was,” he said.

“I think our society is very reluctant to commit; people are always in doubt and often are not happy because we just don’t enter into life.

“As Christians, the festival is a reminder to start again and re-enter into life and I think it is a beautiful thing to celebrate.”

St Kieran’s will celebrate its annual festival on Sunday, October 11.
