NEWMAN College will be holding an inaugural Family Mass event to kick-start the academic year and celebrate the 200 year bicentenary of Marist education.

The event will acknowledge the international bicentenary of the Institute of the Marist Brothers who have been present in WA since 1913 and in Churchlands since 1965.

Deputy principal Daniel Lynch said the Family Mass would provide an opportunity to gather the school and community together.

“The Mass will feature two specially commissioned bicentenary Marist artworks on their second stop on their 12 month national pilgrimage around Australia following their commissioning at the Marist Community at Santa Teresa in the Northern Territory,” he said.

“As a community who proudly identifies itself as Catholic, we look forward to walking the journey with each student, parent and family member across their time as members of our College community.”

Mr Lynch said the bicentenary of the Marist Brothers invited the community to consider their local identity in the Marist tradition.

Mr Lynch said he expected more than 3000 people to attend the event.

The Family Mass will be held on February 22 at 6.30pm on the oval.
