NORTH BEACH teenager William Kent took steps forward in achieving his dream of becoming a marine engineer through a youth scholarship.

The Newman College Year 10 student received the opportunity to go onboard a Leeuwin Ocean Adventure Foundation ship on a voyage from Monkey Mia to Fremantle.

He was awarded a Woodside Marine Scholarship for young people aged 14 to 25.

Will said he hoped to return to the ship as a crewmember or captain in the future.

Leeuwin chief executive Carol Shannon said marine studies could be costly to young people who wanted a career on the ocean.
