PEOPLE of all abilities enjoyed a range of sports at Osborne Park-based Citizen Advocacy Perth West’s annual sports picnic.

The community organisation hosted the event with Special Olympics WA at Celebration Park in Balga this month, with support from fundraising group Mondo Community Warriors.

The day provided an opportunity for people of all abilities to meet and try a variety of sports and activities from bocce to cricket.

Citizen Advocacy co-ordinator Dianne Fraser said the organisation relied on volunteers who were linked to people with intellectual disabilities who often had little or no family support.

“They make a long-term voluntary commitment acting as friend, mentor, guide or spokesperson to help a vulnerable person with intellectual disability get more out of life and ensure their life runs smoothly,” she said.

“The circumstances of the person with disability are very carefully matched with the time availability and interests of the citizen advocate.”
