OLDER Stirling residents can participate in a free balance workshop at Osborne Park Hospital (OPH) that aims to prevent falls and accidents.

The workshop will cover balance exercises to prevent falls, managing medications and appropriate footwear.

Osborne Park nurse Lorraine Beaty said falls were not a “normal” part of aging and balance was the key to preventing falls for older people.

“There are many exercises older adults can undertake to improve their balance and this year members of the community are invited to OPH to participate in balance exercises, tai chi classes and speak to a range of clinicians about falls prevention,” she said.

Ms Beaty said one in three people over 65 experienced a fall each year and the most common injuries are hip and thigh fractures and head injuries.
