BURUNDI’S first lady has opened the African country’s first Australian consulate in Osborne Park.

Victory Life Centre’s Barry Court is the honorary consul of Burundi and hosted the official opening on July 30, along with his wife and centre pastor Margaret.

Stirling Mayor Mark Irwin, Mirrabooka MLA Janine Freeman, who was representing the Premier, and opposition leader Liza Harvey joined Burundi First Lady Denise Bucumi Nkurunziza and Foreign Minister Ezichiel Nibigira at the event, which included a tour of the Margaret Court Community Outreach facility.

The Consulate of the Republic of Burundi operates from Victory Life Centre’s Neil Street premises.

Australia’s Smart Traveller website lists Burundi as a ‘do not travel’ destination because of its high levels of crime, civil unrest and threat of a terrorist attack.
