Plans for new Woolworths store in Perth

Laura PondStirling Times

SUPERMARKET giant Woolworths has revealed it has plans for an iconic Scarborough site but says it wants input from the community.

The company reportedly bought the West Coast Highway site housing the White Sands Tavern last September and aims to create a “market-style” Woolworths store alongside specialty stores, café precinct and a commercial or residential component.

It plans to lodge a development application for its stage one plans later this year or early 2020, which would comprise the supermarket, café and stores such as a bakery, butcher, patisserie and bottle shop.

Woolworths is considering options for the second stage including residential or serviced apartments, retirement living or co-working spaces.

WA property development manager Alicia Jones said they would offer a “full line modern supermarket and convenient car parking” to meet residents’ needs.

“Our core vision for the redevelopment is to transform the White Sands Hotel site into a vibrant market square that can provide a convenient and high-quality destination for local residents to live, shop, eat and relax in a unique coastal setting,” she said.

The company says it will seek community feedback on its plans via meetings with residents and stakeholders, online surveys, community focus groups, open days, phone and email channels, and a project website.

“The White Sands site is an important part of Scarborough’s beachfront renewal, which will help create a vibrant and lively community hub for local residents,” Ms Jones said.

“It’s important we get it right and we’re seeking community views to help shape our vision for the area.

“We will be engaging with the community throughout the planning process, including before we lodge our development application, expected later this year.”
