Stage set for Karrinyup Shopping Centre redevelopment

THE Karrinyup Shopping Centre redevelopment will open in stages, with the first set to be delivered late next year.

Construction started this week on the $800 million project.

AMP Capital WA divisional development manager Scott Nugent revealed “exciting” new tenants, included international retailers, were to be announced.

He said the centre had not been upgraded in 20 years and while other Perth centres had been redeveloped recently, or proposed to be, he believed Karrinyup’s mixed-use town centre design set it apart.

“I think what we’re doing is unique,” he said.

“We’re adding residential, which aligns with the State Government’s urban infill policy, and a true main street, which people can drive down and will host events.”

The centre will double in size with 290 retailers, a dining precinct and the first Hoyts cinema north of the river spread across 109,000sq m.

Mr Nugent said there had been a lot of work behind the scenes.

“It’s been a lot of hard work and there’s a lot of hard work to come,” he said.

“Everyone is elated to see this development start.”

He believed the redevelopment represented owner UniSuper’s “faith in WA” and it followed consultation with the community.

“We just asked the customers, ‘what do you want?’,” he said.

“The City of Stirling is a great part of Perth, it’s got great amenity with access to the beach and it’s a tight- knit community.”

The first stage of the project is the east multi-deck carpark, which will open in late 2019, followed by the north mall fashion loop, cafe court and fresh food precinct.

The western precinct, main street, food and beverage and cinema will follow.

Retailers are trading as normal throughout the redevelopment.

Mr Nugent said more parking would be provided while some areas were closed.
