Surf-loving stay-at-home dad rides waves of swell hobby

Padbury resident Peter Jovic developed swellsup.com with the intention of publishing photographs of all surfers, regardless of their skill level.

‘The fact that people are able to view an image of themselves, they can just log on, have a look, they don’t need to subscribe, they just click on a gallery and there might be a photo of them and that’s the real basis of the site.’

The father of two said he left work in construction safety after becoming disillusioned with the industry and decided to build a website devoted to local surfers.

‘The east coast websites really cater to people on the eastern seaboard and they didn’t give too much of a fuss about what was going on over here, so I thought it was about time that somebody grabbed the bull by the horns and showcased what we have over here.’

Mr Jovic now devotes his time to photographing and developing the website, as well as taking care of his children as a stay-at-home dad.

‘The one thing I’ve realised is from City Beach to Scarborough to Trigg, there’s all these little surf micro cultures and it’s actually quite amazing and I never knew it existed until I started doing this.’

Mr Jovic, a surfer for more than 25 years, said he’d received a lot of positive feedback about the site.

‘I’ve been talking to a lot of people in the car park or even just out on the water and some people say it’s bringing the stoke back in the line-up’
