THOUSANDS of people flocked to Scarborough Beach Pool after its long- awaited opening last week.

Swimmers queued early to be among the first to use the facility when it opened on January 22 at 5.30am.

The City of Stirling recorded 3400 entries on its first two days of operation and signed up nearly 300 members. It also had more than 500 enquiries about its Learn to Swim program.

Scarborough resident Chris Williams was first through the doors. She said she wanted to celebrate her birthday with a dip in the new pool.

“It was fabulous; it’s a really perfect temperature, the salt water smells nice and it’s good it’s an Olympic-sized 50m pool,” she said after her swim.

Scarborough swimmers Kerrie Tierney (11) and Neve (11) and Jasmine Gaunt (9) also gave it their tick of approval.

Mother Katrina Gaunt said they were eager to be there for the opening.

“It’s a pretty historic event; it’s nice to be part of it and I’ve been watching it develop,” she said.

“It’s a fantastic complex; it’s great to bring the local community together.

“Now the beach is a facility for everyone.”

Stirling Mayor Mark Irwin, who joined swimmers in the pool, said the opening ended a long journey for the Scarborough community.

“The facility will draw on Scarborough’s unique identity and create a vibrant hub of activity where beachgoers, visitors and local residents of all ages will be able to swim, train, recreate and grab a bite to eat, all while enjoying the amazing view of Scarborough Beach,” he said.

The City will host a community open day at the pool on March 11.
