Type 1 diabetes no barrier to chasing dreams

Laura PondStirling Times

YOKINE resident Emily Vuong is not letting Type 1 diabetes keep her from chasing her dreams.

She took to running just 18 months ago but is already committed to taking on the Perth Running Festival half marathon on October 6.

“I wanted to push my own personal boundaries and prove that there are no limits to living with Type 1 diabetes,” she said.

“Once I started running, I realised that it wasn’t as hard as I’d imagined.”

Ms Vuong is aiming for a personal best in the half marathon around the Swan River and will use it as an important pre-cursor to her first marathon in New York in November.

“I never thought I’d be able to run this far as I have to carefully manage my blood sugar levels during intense exercise,” she said.

“The feeling of running and feeling invincible after each run is indescribable and translates to other areas of my life.”
