FORMER Stirling mayor Terry Tyzack was a surprise late nomination on Friday to become Stirling’s next mayor.
Tyzack threw his hat in the ring as nominations closed and as another former mayor, Giovanni Italiano, decided not to run.
Mr Tyzack, who lost by less than 150 votes to Cr Bianca Sandri for a councillor seat in the inglewood ward in 2017, had earlier this month backed Cr Elizabeth Re and called for voters to do their due diligence on candidates.
He said he had been “strongly requested” to run for mayor by ratepayers and “the business community of Mt Lawley in particular” over parking meters and plans for a plaza.
Mr Tyzack will be up against Cr Adam Spagnolo, Cr Elizabeth Re, incumbent Mark Irwin, Cr David Lagan and Sanjeev Gupta.
Cr Italiano is hoping to be re-elected a councillor in the Osborne ward, saying he had done his stint as mayor.
“I want to continue to look after my community I have served honourably and credibly in total for 17 years,” he said.
He will be up against Lisa Thornton, Mr Gupta, Frank Agostino and Amit Kumar.
The election is on October 19.
