Verge items taken in possible case of mistaken identity

SCARBOROUGH police officers believe a man mistook renovation items for a council verge collection on Karrinyup Road in Trigg on January 26.

The homeowners were in the process of building a cool room and left 15 cool room panels, which were taken from the verge.

Senior Sergeant Glenn Dowding said CCTV footage showed a car driving past the house twice.

“Driving past twice isn’t usual behaviour which led us to believe that we thought it was put out for verge collection,” he said.

“Sometimes we have incidents like this when people are waiting to move items inside, leave them on the verge and people assume it is there for the taking.”

Sgt Dowding said it was an offence to take any property from a verge or front yard even if there is a verge collection.

“Despite what most people think taking something from a verge collection is actually a stealing offence,” he said.

Police are assessing the CCTV footage to identify the offender.
