‘When I joined the army at 18 I was dating a Subiaco girl, and I remember the landing bay was located almost exactly where the swimming pool is now,’ the Lords member of 20 years said.

After celebrating his 90th birthday last week, Mr Stone said it was remarkable how certain places continued to have a lasting impact on his life.

‘For many years I would swim laps in that same pool every day of the week, but nowadays I just visit the spa and do my own exercises about three times a week,’ he said.

To celebrate four years since the City of Subiaco reopened the centre, Lords will host an open day this Saturday.

Mayor Heather Henderson said she was looking forward to marking the occasion.

‘We have seen Lords become an exceptional facility over the last four years, which delivers so much to our community,’ Mrs Henderson said.

As one of the last three honorary Lords members aged over 80, Mr Stone said he would keep coming to the centre until the day he dies. ‘My wife Shirley and I have been married 64 years, and feel like the staff here are our family,’ he said.
