WA’s Matthew Ebden scores upset win over John Isner at Australia Open

WEMBLEY Downs Tennis Club life member and former Hale School student Matthew Ebden has scored an upset win in the first round of the Australian Open.

The Australian number 2 beat 16th seed American John Isner in four sets at Margaret Court Arena, winning 6-4, 3-6, 6-3, 6-3.

Ebden was ranked 696 in the world just a year ago and it was his first win of four matches against Isner.

He will next play former Australian Open quarter-finalist Alexandr Dolgopolov, of Ukraine, in the second round.
