Wembley Downs: Hale School student tops French competition

PARLEZ-vous Francaise is a resounding ‘oui’ for Hale School student Yale Cheng.

He won this year’s Alliance Francaise de Perth examinations competition for the Year 11 category.

The annual external exams test students on their French reading, writing and listening skills.

The top 20 in each year group progress to an oral exam to decide the winners.

Hale Year 11 students Reece Ashley, Jeremy Pearson-Lemme and Chris Young and Year 12 students Joshua Cheng and Kevin Shah-Mansouri also competed in the final round.

Yale said this was the first time he had made the top 20 and said he was surprised to win.

“I didn’t think I’d do that well in speaking,” he said.

“I found out after a soccer win so it was a good surprise.”

Yale has been learning French for six years and will continue to study the language in Year 12.
