West Coastcare nominated for national award after Mettam’s Pool rejuvenation

AN environmental group rejuvenating the Mettam’s Pool sand dunes are nominated for the National Landcare Awards.

West Coastcare took out the state award and is now in the running to win the national Coastcare Award.

The organisation has collaborated with Marmion Primary School and the City of Stirling on many programs for the past eight years.

Program co-ordinator Penny Stewart said the group was proud to be representing WA at the September awards.

“To have won the state award means that all the volunteers’ work, our partnerships with Marmion Primary School and the City of Stirling have been recognised and all their work is valued by the community,” she said.

The Waterman’s Bay resident said the work focussed on the rejuvenation of the coastal dune system at Mettam’s Pool, North Beach and encouraging the community’s involvement in environmental projects.

“Over 20,000 seedlings have been planted and the students of Marmion Primary School have been propagating seedlings for the program,” she said.

“The Mettams Project will be complete within 12 months and we hope to start a new project with the City of Stirling in the future along our beautiful coastline.

“West Coastcare will be presenting a workshop at the Australian Landcare Awards in Melbourne in September and we hope that the community will consider jumping on the website to vote for us in the people’s choice.”

Landcare Australia chief executive Tessa Jakszewicz said it was important to showcase ‘Landcarers’ from across the country.

“The full value of learning new ways to protect our environment and advance our agricultural practices will only be realised if it’s shared among all of us,” she said.

“With this approach everyone can adopt new methods and techniques for their Landcare projects.”

Voting for the People’s Choice Award is open until 6pm (AEST) on Wednesday, September 21 and the winner will be announced at the gala dinner the following night on September 22.
