PERTH Wildcats captain Damian Martin has been named the City of Stirling’s inaugural youth ambassador.
The champion basketballer will promote the City’s recently launched youth framework, which aims to help young people contribute to community life, society and environment and is backed by a line-up of fun events.
Martin said he was excited to support the initiative.
“I believe that an energised youth is one of the community’s greatest assets and it’s so important that local governments provide avenues for their engagement”, he said.
“I look forward to promoting the framework and the exciting calendar of events that Stirling has created to connect with its younger residents”.
The City decided to enhance youth engagement after 2016 Census data showed 17 per cent of its residents were aged from 10 to 24.
Upcoming events targeted at young people include the Groundswell Festival, Basketball at Osborne, Yagan Virtual Reality and Skate and Skirmish.
Community development director Michael Quirk said Martin’s appointment was a coup for the City.
“Having him on board means we have a well-respected and high profile sports star to help promote Stirling’s youth framework and to encourage young people to contribute their knowledge, skills and experience to community life,” he said.
