YOKINE driver Tony Ricciardello has broken a 35-year-old record at Barbagallo Wanneroo Raceway.

The 10-time Australian Sports Sedan Series winner set a racing lap record of 53.1680 seconds at the raceway on March 3.

Ricciardello was driving an Alfa Romeo Alfetta Chevrolet at an average speed of 163.52km/h.

Tasmanian John Bowe set the previous record of 53.44 seconds in 1984.

The feat came during the raceway’s Golden Jubilee Race Meet to mark its 50th anniversary.

WA Sporting Car Club race events manager Cameron Edwards said the circuit was resurfaced in January and provided an improved grip level.

“The previous surface, which was laid 15 years ago, was renowned across the country and the motorsport community as one of the most abrasive surfaces to drive on,” he said.

“The newly laid surface will hopefully now allow competitors greater tyre life and as the track surface is bedded in over the coming months, along with rubber being laid down, the grip levels for all competitors should remain more consistent.”
