Readers will remember the outcry from ratepayers who had already paid their annual rates bills, which covered the cost of two green waste and two household junk pick-ups from verges during the 2012-13 financial year.

The council took a consistent hammering in these pages because of that unilateral decision.

However, it has not rebated the money it saved.

Will the City now tell us how much it saved by halving those verge collections and whether the architects of that decision were rewarded with bonuses last year?
