Opinion: Electors doing what they are meant to

Simon Wheeler, ScarboroughStirling Times

AT Tuesday’s (February 6) council meeting, Councillor Italiano appeared quite frustrated that despite a planning committee (of which he is chair) unanimously voting to alter the status quo in Mt Lawley despite significant objection, that the input from community members might be, and it appears were, instrumental in council’s reversal of that decision.

Councillor Italiano, in case you forgot, ‘these people’ as you call them, are known as electors and ratepayers, they ‘come along to meetings and talk’ and petition councillors because they feel passionate about one issue or another.

And if they are in any way influential in council’s decision making then please note that this is actually the point of local government.

Local government exists for the community it represents, something our new mayor, early signs suggest, appears to understand.
