Plans to upgrade Doubleview Primary flawed

Janet Ryan, ScarboroughStirling Times

I JUST wanted to comment on the proposed development of Doubleview Primary School.

I am in full agreement that the school should be upgraded – it has been working out of at least six demountables for at least 10 years.

The plans that the Government produced have been floating around for at least six years, if not longer.

I saw them when my kids went to the school. The plan was to move the school, knock down the old school and reclaim an oval.

However, now they intend to build the school and move 300 kids into the old school. This will put huge pressure on the current traffic situation.

It is not just the extra kids and cars, but teachers, support staff and buses as it will be a high school.

That is around 700 kids sharing one oval. I would not want my primary school kids sharing an oval with high school kids. No way!

The remaining oval is crown land. It is a reserve and not designated for such heavy use. Why can the Government not combine Kapinara primary (around 300 kids) and City Beach primary (170) and give the City Beach school over to the international school?

Doubleview primary is well overdue for an upgrade and this could easily be done in their current location. The ovals would be left alone for school, club and community use.
