PROPOSAL DUMB

Staff ReporterStirling Times

I ATTENDED the special electors’ meeting held at the City of Stirling last Monday regarding the development of an aquatic centre at Hamersley Golf Course adjacent to Marmion Avenue.

The City takes the high moral ground when it states that it consults with the community but with respect to the Hamersley golfers it is clearly evident that there was no consultation or communication regarding the proposed imposition of an aquatic centre on the golf course.

I cannot understand how the Mayor and fellow councillors could possibly commit to the concept of building an aquatic centre on a golf course when to anyone with any degree of common sense this scheme is absolutely ridiculous, short sighted and unimaginative and when a prime location like Scarborough Beach is ignored for short-term gain.

It is also obvious that the people within the community who support an aquatic centre on a golf course, which will destroy dozens of native trees including mature tuarts, have no environmental values or empathy with our local fauna and flora.

Yet they say, quite falsely, that there is a social dividend ” so what about environmental dividends and the social dividends the golfers now enjoy.

What golf course in Australia could possible canvass the idea of an aquatic centre being amongst the fairways?

The excellent suggestion by ALP State leader Mark McGowan and supported by the Mayor David Boothman last year regarding an ocean pool at Scarborough Beach offers beachgoers and every sports enthusiast a possible recreation facility that could be world class.

Let’s face it, a $44-49 million aquatic centre paid for by the City ratepayers on a golf course is plainly dumb.
