IF West Australians don’t want to live in a society with an American-style gun culture, where animals are hunted and killed for sport, they need to take a stand now.
The Standing Committee on Public Administration has submitted a report to Environment Minister Albert Jacob recommending that the Government introduce a two-year trial of recreational hunting on public land in WA.
The committee has chosen to ignore many concerns raised about this and to side with the gun lobby.
Although only a trial is proposed at this stage, about half the area of WA, including State forests, national parks and nature reserves, is public land and potentially at risk of being opened to recreational hunters.
The ministers decision will determine if we retain our laws on gun control or abandon them and suffer the consequences. It will also reflect the power of the gun lobby.
