I actually did have a quiet chuckle when I read her letter. But as bad as it is and no doubt will be again, people need to understand that it is only they who can put an end to it by rejecting the ‘two-party preferred’ political system that is firmly entrenched in Australia.

I stood as an independent candidate (Carine) in the 2008 State election. I was left devastated within the first half hour on polling day because it soon became obvious to me that the only thing the voters cared about that day was who was Liberal and who was Labor. If you were someone else or with somebody else you were nowhere.

The polls will tell you it is going to be a very close 50/50 result again; can Australia afford yet another split decision with two political parties? In the forthcoming Federal election, Australia has much more than that’
