Beach volleyball: Scarborough’s Cole Durant finds gold at home

Kristie LimStirling Times

Former Scarborough resident Durant (25) and doubles partner Zachary Schubert (21) defeated top seeds Jayson Fox and Mark van Winsen 2-0.

The pair’s victory followed a win at the NSW Open in December, being runners-up at the South Australian Open and a quarter-final finish at the Queensland Open last month.

Durant, now based in SA, said he competed in his home state only once a year.

“I love coming home… Scarborough is my favourite beach, it is beautiful,” he said.

“It is just a really good opportunity to practise running our systems; we have some offensive and defensive systems.

“A big thing we are both working on at the moment is in-game and pre-game routines; so we can just run through all those regardless of competition.”

Durant said the WA Open served as a good preparation for his and Schubert’s upcoming events on the Federation Internationale de Volleyball (FIVB) World Tour.

“It works out really well because our Australian tour leads into the Worlds and Asian tour,” he said.

“We are getting ready for the Asian tour in April, which will help us qualify for the world championships and this (WA Open) is a good pre-tournament.

“We actually go to Iran this week, so again, it is another good opportunity to compete and practise.”

The duo will compete at an FIVB World Tour competition on Kish Island, Iran, from February 15 to 18.
