Karate students bring home gold from national comp

KARATE schools in Balcatta and Osborne Park have been strongly represented at this month’s national championships.

Five students from Gold Martial Arts in Balcatta and six from AKKA Martial Arts in Osborne Park represented WA at the Australian Karate Federation National Championships in Tasmania from August 2 to 4.

Competitors from the two schools won three gold medals between them; Gold’s Lester Maru John finished first in his veterans male kata category and Isabella Martin won the female kumite event for eight to nine-year-olds, and AKKA student Anna Giraudo (11) taking home gold for her weight division in the under 12 girls event.

Laura Golding (Gold) picked up three bronze medals and AKKA teammates Isabella Van Ingen-Kal (13) and Sophia Smalto each won bronze.

Isabella, Madeleine Parkin (12), James Gregory (12), and Annie Porter (14) also came away with medals from team events.
