SURFERS from across WA convened in Yallingup for the WA Longboard Titles opening event.

There were rough conditions for the three-day competition from February 22 to 24, with boards broken and leashes snapped.

Surfers from Gabbadah to Mandurah more than held their own against south-west competitors, with many Perth metro region surfers coming out on top.

Perth surfer and reigning State champion Georgia Young won the open women’s longboard event, while Marmion’s Jack Medland finished second in the men’s open and won the men’s open logger category.

“It’s been such a fun event and the waves turned on each day for us,” Medland said.

Scott Trew, of Gabbadah, was another standout, taking out the over 40 men’s longboard and finishing third in the men’s logger.

“All the guys have been surfing so well and it was tough to hear the scores out there so I just kept catching waves hoping I was improving my position,” he said.

North Beach’s Amanda Curley won the over 40 women’s longboard, with Belinda Le Grice (East Fremantle) finishing third and Heathridge’s Jane Grigeri coming in fourth.

Other winners included Neil Thompson (Scarborough) in the over 40 men’s logger, Katherine Van Kampen (Bicton) in the open women’s logger and Stand Davies (Daglish) in the over 65 men’s longboard.

Surfing WA events maneger Justin Majeks said longboarding was an important part of surfing’s history.

“It was so good to see how well everyone competed alongside one another no matter of their age or gender,” he said.

The second event of the series will be held in Denmark in May.
