Laura PondStirling Times

SURFERS from around WA converged at Trigg on the weekend to discover who would be crowned King of the Point.

Margaret River surfer Jano Belo took out the title, beating two-time King of the Point champion and former Trigg local Luke Campbell.

“I feel so amazing, the King of the Point is such a great event and I feel so blessed to have all my family here as well as my boys who have been running around having heaps of fun,” Belo said.

“Luke and I are good friends and we used to compete on the World Qualifying Series together so to be in the final with him was a special moment.”

Dunsborough’s Holly Thomas won the Queen of the Point division, ahead of Coral Durant (Carnarvon), April McPherson (Mandurah) and Taiana Duncan (Kalbarri).

Jed Mattinson, of Margaret River, was the under-21 Prince of the Point winner and the over-30s Lord of the Point division title went to Scarborough’s Luke Saranah, who was the only metropolitan-based surfer to taste success.

Surfing WA events manager Justin Majeks congratulated everyone involved in the event.

“It was a big call to move the event forward into March, but the call has turned out really great and I’m thrilled to see the commitment and support from all the surfers involved,” he said.

“A big congratulations goes out to all of our winners and I’m thrilled to see the King of the Point cement its place as one of the best events of the year.”
