Laura PondStirling Times

NORTHERN suburbs surfers have overcome windy conditions to grab success at the first round of the WA Surf Masters Titles.

Swells were 2 to 3ft high at Margaret River’s Gas Bay for the weekend competition.

Winners included Trigg’s Mark Clift, Sorrento surfer Pascal Hutchinson, Patrick Connell, of City Beach, and North Beach’s Carly Bruce.

Hutchinson beat a star-studded local field to win the open men’s division event.

“It’s been a very long time since I’ve won something,” he said.

“It reminds me a lot of Trigg Point out there so I felt comfortable with the wind and surfing on my backhand.”

Clift took out the over 45 and over 50 men’s division titles, describing the competition as a “cracking couple of days”.

“I’ve always loved doing these events and winning a couple of finals is just a bonus,” he said.

Bruce won the over 35 women’s event and took out fourth place in the open women’s competition, while City Beach’s Paul Paterson finished second in the over 40s and third in the over 45s categories.

Connell was best in the over 55s ahead of fourth-placed Glenn Williams, of Hillarys, North Beach’s Ian Darby took third place in the over 60s and Scarborough surfer Brett Hardy came fourth in the over 35 event.
