Swell Times: Surf film Desert Blue premiering in Scarborough

Laura PondStirling Times

SCARBOROUGH bar El Grotto is hosting the premiere of local surf film Desert Blue on Saturday night.

Shot entirely during a trip north this winter, the film is the brainchild of Pistol Surf Co’s Nick Muntz and received backing from Gage Roads Brewing Co, Von Dresselt Surfboards and El Grotto.

As the event description reads on Facebook, “Ever wondered what 37 days in the desert with no internet and no contact to the outside world looks like? Trust us, you don’t want to know, but if for some reason you do, come along and find out”.

Desert Blue features surfing from Muntz, Jake Edwards, Josh Cattlin and Jack Chalis. Tickets are $10 on the door from 6pm, with a raffle and local DJs on the night.

Over in Europe, the race for the WSL (World Surf League) World Champion is heating up, with Julian Wilson winning the France leg to keep himself in the conversation with Brazilian surfers Felipe Toledo and Gabriel Medina.

Early losses for Steph Gilmore and Lakey Peterson will see the women’s title decided at the last event of the year in Hawaii.

And congratulations go to WA girl Bronte Macaulay for not only taking down Peterson but continuing on to a semi-final finish in France, her best result of the year.
