THERE is great news for surfing in the west with the recent announcement that two World Surf League (WSL) qualifying events are scheduled for October.

The WA Pro Surf Series will put the focus back on surfing in the South-West with consecutive men’s and women’s Qualifying Series 1000 competitions to run in Mandurah and Yallingup from October 13 to 21.

On the WSL Championship Tour things are really heating up following the Tahiti Pro, with Brazilian Gabriel Medina edging out Aussie Owen Wright for top honours.

Filipe Toledo still holds the yellow jersey over Medina and Australian Julian Wilson so the title race is still anyone’s guess.

The tour heads to the Surf Ranch in Lemoore, California next.

Congratulations to WA surfing stalwart Mick McAuliffe, who has been appointed the Australian junior surf team co-coach for the International Surfing Association World Junior Championships.
