Staff WriterThe Advocate

INDUSTRY body vegetablesWA is inviting growers to a field day focussed on leafy lettuce varieties in Gingin next month.

Chief executive John Shannon said the full day tour and workshop at the Loose Leaf Lettuce Company on May 3 was an opportunity for growers to explore leafy varieties and speak to seed representatives.

“On display will be head lettuce varieties such as iceberg, cos and coral, plus baby leaf varieties like spinach and rocket,” he said.

“Growers will have the opportunity to tour seed plots, see the varieties in situ and ask seed representatives any questions they have.”

Additionally, there will be a presentation and discussion about soil health and disease management by Doris Blaesing from RMCG and Len Tesoriero from NSW DPI.

“Being aware of options to manage soil-borne diseases is an extremely important aspect of good farm management and we are pleased to offer growers this opportunity,” Mr Shannon said.

VegetablesWA will run the field day with the Leafy Variety Trial and seed companies including Bayer, South Pacific Seeds, Seminis and Rijk Zwaan.

Maureen and Kevan Dobra will host it at 198 Ashby Road, Gingin from 10am to 3pm on May 3.
