BALLOT papers for the City of Swan election will be mailed out in the first week of October, with 25 candidates vying for eight seats in five wards.

Current councillors Mick Wainwright, John McNamara, David Fardig, David McDonnell, Patty Williams, Kevin Bailey and Darryl Trease are all up for re-election. City chief executive Mike Foley said residents and ratepayers should keep an eye out for their postal voting packages arriving in the mail.

“The package will include a list of candidates, ballot papers, instructions on how to vote and a declaration,” he said.

“To vote, simply follow the instructions included in the package.”

WA Electoral Commissioner David Kerslake said electors would have about two to three weeks to return their ballot papers, either by post or lodging them at the council office.

“However, it is still important that electors return their completed postal vote packages as quickly as possible as ballot papers must be with the returning officer when polling closes at 6pm on Saturday, October 21, to be included in the count.”

Mr Foley said that while voting in a local government election was not compulsory in WA, it was important to get involved.

“By voting in your local government election, you are having your say on how you want your issues and interests to be represented and I would encourage all electors to take part,” he said.

The Shire of Chittering will decide three vacancies at the election, with Crs Don Gibson, Peter Osborn and Michelle Rossouw up for re-election, and four other candidates.

There are six candidates for four vacancies on the Shire of Gingin.
