COMPACT housing design will be the way of the future, with plans for 80sq m lots revealed today in Ellenbrook.
The futuristic and innovative lots are the first under 100sq m to gain green title development in WA.
Housing Minister Peter Tinley, Swan Hills MLA Jessica Shaw and LWP property group managing director Danny Murphy broke ground on the first eight lots to be built in Ellenbrook.
Mr Tinley said the new compact designs offered affordable housing and would mean more housing options as the population grew.
He said the smaller blocks could also be a way of the future to help targets with infill development.
“The cost of land has gone up a lot in the past 20 years,” he said.
“We are at a point where the median price of land is about 52 per cent of a house and the reality of people owning houses is getting more difficult.
“More affordable housing options are needed; it’s not just about the box you live in, it’s also about the community you live in and the services available.
“Ellenbrook has set the benchmark that future developments will have to strive to meet.”
The housing design follows a similar, which has been used in Adelaide, with 50sq m lots on offer.
The houses are set to be ready to view by February 2018.
Mr Murphy said the housing options were attractive to those wanting different housing options and something more affordable.
“We found that people were wanting more compact living that wasn’t an apartment and something more affordable,” he said
Ms Shaw said the new housing lots were minutes from the future Metronet station site and the hospitality and retail precincts.
“It’s really important we have affordable housing stock in Ellenbrook,” she said.
“It’s really exciting seeing developments like this.”
