Brabham, Ellenbrook, Banksia Grove and Aveley among top offenders for abusing watering roster

HOUSEHOLDS in Brabham, Ellenbrook, Banksia Grove and Aveley are among the top 10 offending suburbs to use their sprinklers on the wrong days.

Figures from the Water Corporation show Brabham was the fourth highest on the list, with 193 infringements issued for breaching the sprinkler roster since 1 January 2016.

Households in Ellenbrook and Banksia Grove were the fifth worst offenders, with both suburbs at 188 infringements so far this year.

Aveley came in seventh highest, receiving 168 infringements and Caversham equal ninth, with 144 infringements.

Water Corporation spokeswoman Clare Lugar encouraged households to check their sprinkler systems were set correctly to help save water in the drying climate.

“The two-day-per-week sprinkler roster was made permanent nearly a decade ago and has been widely accepted,” Ms Lugar said.

“Many people do not realise that over 40 per cent of water use in the home occurs outside in the garden, so this is where most of us can make big savings.”

Water Corporation has collaborated with South Metropolitan Tafe to deliver free waterwise irrigation workshops across Perth.

The workshops will educate participants about a range of aspects to waterwise irrigation, including how to program irrigation systems to abide by the sprinkler roster.

Sprinklers can be used once per watering day either before 9am or after 6pm.

Water Corporation recommends that pop up or fixed spray sprinklers are set to run for 10 minutes each station.

If you witness anyone breaching the sprinkler roster, phone Water Corporation on 13 10 39 to report the breach.

Households receive a $100 fine if they are sighted breaching the sprinkler ban by an inspector, and a warning if they are reported by a member of the public, or if an inspector observes that sprinklers have been used.
