THE deadline to nominate people for the Western Australian of the Year Awards 2019 has been extended to March 1.

Organisers are encouraging people to go online to self-nominate or nominate someone who is doing extraordinary work in their specialist field, or in the community at large, and acting as a role model for others.

Categories include Aboriginal, arts and culture, business, community, professions, sport and youth.

Celebrate WA chairman Michael Anghie encouraged all Western Australians to consider the outstanding people they have met in their lives, and to nominate them before the closing date.

“Every year the calibre of finalists never ceases to amaze me, and I am sure 2019 will produce another group of high calibre individuals who are pursuing important goals in a dedicated and selfless way,” he said.

“The awards allow us to appreciate the fantastic work people do in our communities, inspiring young Western Australians to continue striving to improve our great State.”

To be nominated, a person must only have been born in WA or have made the state their home.

Finalists for each category will be announced in April with winners named on Friday, May 31 at the start of the WA Day long weekend.

Last year’s winners included Mike Daube (pictured), Janet Holmes Court, Diane Smith-Gander, James Trevelyan, Ron Alexander and Greg Hire.
