Flying start to Gingin science fest

The festival was formally opened by WA Governor Kerry Sanderson, while guests included local, State and Federal politicians.

The formal opening was followed by lunch at the Gravity Discovery Centre, where Jackie Davidson spoke on "Ten Billion Planets and Counting".

National Science Week 2015 runs from August 15 to 23.

David Blair, the founder and inspiration behind the Gingin Science Festival, is a professor of physics at the University of Western Australia and the director of the Australian International Gravitational Research Centre.

Prof Blair said he was aiming to create the biggest science festival in regional Australia.

Many events will be held across the Shire of Gingin until September 19.
