TO the surprise of few, the intersection of Gnangara Road and Beechboro Road has achieved the undesired title of WA's most dangerous intersection.

The stretch of Gnangara Road leading up to the State’s most dangerous intersection was also named the most dangerous road in RAC’s latest Risky Roads results.

Luckily, relief is on the way for Ellenbrook and surrounding motorists, with roadwork under way to improve safety and congestion on the busy thoroughfare.

The entire upgrade of Gnangara Road is expected in 2017 but the section between Ellenbrook and just past the intersection of Gnangara Road and Beechboro Road will be finished earlier.

Elsewhere in the City of Swan, the Reid Highway and Malaga Drive intersection, Toodyay Road up to Red Hill and the Great Eastern Highway Bypass in Hazelmere also made the top 10 list.

There were 109 crashes at the intersection of Gnangara Road and Beechboro Road between 2009 and 2013 while in the same period the Reid Highway and Malaga Drive intersection had 272.

West Swan MLA Rita Saffioti said urgent funding was needed.

‘Despite promising to build an overpass at the Malaga-Reid intersection by 2015, works have not yet commenced,’ she said.

‘The minister needs to provide some clarity as to when works will commence and when they will finish.’
