WA artists of all kinds will be invited to display their work at Houghton Wines Art Space thanks to a new management duo.
Artists Janine Koefoed and Belinda Kay have taken over the art space, with hopes to open it up to new artists and a more diverse range of work.
Koefoed said the gallery would only showcase WA artists in an effort to encourage and support more local aspiring artists.
She said she found the space while looking for somewhere to showcase her own work.
“I found out that it had been empty for six months and we thought it would be a great space to manage,” she said.
The duo will be showcasing all types of work and selling giftware.
Kay said the idea was to give smaller and struggling artists a go.
“There are so many great artists out there that don’t get recognised and we know first hand how hard it is,” she said.
Unlike many galleries, Houghton Art Space won’t be charging commission, only a wall fee or hanging fee.
Koefoed said this was to encourage new artists and provide them with opportunities.
“It’s so the artist isn’t penalised so heavily and to give new artists a chance,” she said.
“There are many artists out there, but they don’t have big bucks; we’re just trying to give people options.”
